How to Install Replacement ISX Fuel Injectors

®Cummins is a registered trademark of Cummins, Inc.

Before Installation

  • Engine operation creates high pressure fuel that could remain in the injection lines after shutting down the engine.
  • Do not perform any service to the engine while its running.
  • Make sure the work area is clean and free of dirt or contaminates in the area.
  • Only use clean tools and clean engine oil. Failing to do so can introduce contaminates into the fuel system leading to premature or immediate injector failure.

Installation

  • Remove the injectors and thoroughly clean injector bore and hold-down bolt with a suitable brush. Lubricate the injector O-ring with clean engine oil.
  • Holding down the clamp, place the injector and hold-down clamp into the bore in its correct orientation—the injector fuel inlet should face the high-pressure connector bore.
  • Push down on the injector to properly seal the bore.
  • Screw in the injector hold-down bolt—do not tighten.
  • Install the new injector feed tube into the bore. It’s important that the injector forms a proper seal against the injector fuel inlet.

Pre-Torque

  • Pre-torque the injector hold-down bolt to 20 Nm (177 in.-lb)
  • Install the injector feed tube retaining nut. Pre-torque to 20 Nm (177 in.-lb)

Final Torque

Injector Model: Details
R-2897320, R-2872405, R-2894920 • Injector Hold-Down Bolt: 80 Nm (59 ft-lb)
• Injector Feed Tube Retaining Nut: 77 Nm (57 ft-lb)
R-2897518 • Injector Hold-Down Bolt: 65 Nm (48 ft-lb)
• Injector Feed Tube Retaining Nut: 77 Nm (57 ft-lb)

Final Installation

  • Install the injector harness.
  • Tip: Injector circuit faults can result if wires interfere with the rocker lever or engine brake housing.
  • Torque the injector solenoid nuts down to 2 Nm (1lb-in) to avoid terminals on the injector from breaking off.

Trim Codes

Trim Code Programing

Interstate-McBee Injectors have a unique trim code that should be programmed into the engines ECM for each injector using a suitable scan tool.

  • ISX CM2350 X101 & CM2350 X102 engine models do not require trim codes to be programmed into the engine ECM.
  • Per service manuals 4310641 and 4310646, only a fuel injector rest is required. This only applies to the following part numbers: R-2897320 and R-2897518

Reading the trim code on the Injectors

  • Line 1: Part number
  • Line 2: Injector Serial number
  • Line 3: Injector trim code

R1-Trim code programming instructions updated. Updates to torque values specific to R-2897320, R-2872405, R-2894920, R-2897518.
